Psalm 118, 1 - 14

1 O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious; because his mercy endureth for ever.

2 Let Israel now confess that he is gracious, and that his mercy endureth for ever.

3 Let the house of Aaron now confess, that his mercy endureth for ever.

4 Yea, let them now that fear the LORD confess, that his mercy endureth for ever.

5 I called upon the LORD in trouble; and the LORD heard me at large.

6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear what man doeth unto me.

7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me; therefore shall I see my desire upon mine enemies.

8 It is better to trust in the LORD, than to put any confidence in man.

9 It is better to trust in the LORD, than to put any confidence in princes.

10 All nations compassed me round about; but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.

11 They kept me in on every side, they kept me in, I say, on every side; but in the Name of the LORD will I destroy them.

12 They came about me like bees, and are extinct even as the fire among the thorns; for in the Name of the LORD I will destroy them.

13 Thou hast thrust sore at me, that I might fall; but the LORD was my help.

14 The LORD is my strength, and my song; and is become my salvation.

 1 Samuel 3, 1-11, 19

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and he said, ‘Here I am!’ and ran to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, ‘Samuel!’ Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’ Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ Then the Lord said to Samuel, ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. …

As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.

Revelation 7, 9 - 17

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’

And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing,

‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
